Just 53 police agencies across the country have signed on to President Obama’s plan to collect national data on police shootings, according to a recent White House announcement.

In Georgia, Atlanta is the only agency among the more than 600 across the state that is participating in the initiative launched last May.

Eight police bullets pierced the windshield of Caroline Small’s Buick. The 2010 police shooting in Brunswick was among the 184 identified by the AJC.

The FBI has acknowledged that its national gathering of crime stats does not have an accurate count of police shootings and that the problem won’t be corrected until at least 2017, according to the Washington Post.

The AJC last year conducted the most comprehensive review of fatal police shootings in Georgia history and identified 184 fatal shootings from 2010 to 2015. Visit the AJC’s database that tracks shootings and review the cases here.
