Former President Jimmy Carter and wife give $500,000 to state Democratic effort

The families of Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Michelle Nunn and gubernatorial hopeful Jason Carter opened their wallets big time in recent weeks to help the ticket Tuesday100214 carter birthday HS13.

Former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter donated $500,000 to the state Democratic Party on Oct. 9, according to disclosures filed late last week.

Former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn contributed $50,000 on Oct. 24.

The Carters and Nunn weren’t the only big donors to the party in recent weeks,

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave $250,000, as did New York mathematician, hedge fund manager and philanthropist James Simons and the Anne Cox Chambers Foundation. Chambers is a principal owner of Cox Enterprises, owner of the AJC,

Former Gov. Roy Barnes and his law firm gave $77,000.

In all, 14 donors contributed about $1,7 million to the party since the beginning of October.

Republicans got about $1.4 million from 15 donors, including $250,000 from California school choice group StudentsFirst, about $640,000 from national Republican U.S. Senate and U.S. House committees and $50,000 from tobacco giant Altria.
